Here at the Tonga Trench, and aboard the UC San Diego research vessel, Roger Revelle, I have been participating in scientific research alongside Dr. Lihini Aluwihare. As an undergraduate, I feel very lucky to be part of this research expedition. This is my first time on a research vessel, and I have learned so much already. While on the ship, we have been sending audio equipment, video equipment, pumps and filters, and other instruments to measure physical properties of the ocean. While deploying and retrieving all of these devices, I have been learning how they work as well. Looking at how professional and intelligent all the crew and scientists are, it inspires me as an undergraduate to continue my education in science. In a couple years, perhaps I too will be in their shoes conducting research of my own. For the most part, this has been an enormous learning experience for me, from living on a ship, to discovering great areas in science.
