August 30 was the eve of our departure the day was spent loading instruments, equipment and supplies on the ship. Approximately 40 people will be on the ship. The science team is about half, and the crew to operate the ship is the balance. The science team is multidisciplinary. It includes marine biologists, chemists, and an oceanographer/physicist.

Sometimes the most desirable approach from a scientific point of view needs to be balanced with what is practical and feasible to accomplish. Rosa, Doug, Mike, and Dave are talking through the plan for deploying and recovering the “drop cam” with Wes, the ship’s captain. Brett, the resident technician (“restech”) acts as the liaison between the science team and ship’s crew. This highly experienced team worked together to determine a suitable strategy.
